Celebrating Older Americans Month 2025: Flipping the Script on Aging with The Senior Alliance

May is Older Americans Month (OAM), a time to honor the contributions and resilience of older adults across the nation. This year’s theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” encourages us to challenge outdated stereotypes and embrace a more inclusive, empowering narrative about growing older.

At The Senior Alliance, we observe this theme every day in our work to support older adults in thriving and living life on their own terms.

This May, as we reflect on the significance of Older Americans Month, we invite you to join us in flipping the script on aging. Together, we can build a society that recognizes aging as a time of opportunity, growth, and continued contribution.

Contact your U.S. senators

On May 22, the U.S. House passed H.R. 1, a federal budget package that includes historic cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. If enacted, these changes could:

  • Eliminate funding for programs like Meals on Wheels
  • Strip benefits from millions of older adults and low-income individuals
  • Shift costs to states, threatening long-term service stability

The bill now moves to the Senate, where changes are expected. The Senior Alliance urges caregivers and advocates to speak out.

Take Action!

Contact your U.S. senators to oppose provisions in the reconciliation bill that would negatively impact Medicaid and SNAP for older adults and adults with disabilities.

Advocacy is critical to ensuring that the needs of America’s aging population are prioritized in the federal budget.

Star of the month: Keri Gilden

We are thrilled to honor Keri Gilden as one of our Stars of the Month for May!

Here’s what two of her co-workers have to say about Keri:

“Keri consistently maintains excellent quality scores. She is effective is her case management skills including the ability to empower her participants to manage certain tasks independently when appropriate. Her attention to detail and ability to address the many Waiver requirements on a consistent basis do not go unnoticed. She is a pleasure to work with and a great addition to our team.  – Marissa, Quality and Training Manager

Keri was the top quality performer for Waiver and named “Valedictorian” for fiscal year 2024. She takes care of her participant’s health and safety along with meeting program requirements. She accepts new challenges with a smile and a comical comment, but is always willing to help. We are very happy to have her! – Katherine, Quality and Training Manager

And here’s what her manager, Gail, has to add:

“Keri has the exceptional ability to stabilize and build rapport with challenging participants by demonstrating excellent follow up, sound advice and education, and remaining cool, calm, and collected when emotions run high. The Waiver Team is incredibly delighted that Keri chose to join us!”

Thank you, Keri, for all you do to care for our community!

Star of the Month: Sherry Smith

We are thrilled to also honor Sherry Smith as one of our Stars of the Month for May!

Here’s a word from Beth, our Contracts Manager, about Sherry:

“Sherry started working in the Contracts Specialist position in September 2024, and she has already taken over a majority of the application review and onboarding process. She has done a great job of quickly and efficiently learning the ins and out of the contracting with vendors and has helped streamline many processes.

She has also taken on some of the more tedious tasks that have needed to be tackled for a while, such as organizing the vendor contract files. She always has good suggestions and takes initiative on making improvements to spreadsheets and checklists.

Sherry also did a great job setting up and ordering food for the refreshments table at her first Annual Vendor Meeting this year. Sherry asked her son to help us move heavy boxes of brochures along with heavy food items like water for the meeting, which was a big help on a normally stressful morning. We are lucky to have her on the Compliance Department Team.”

Sherry, your willingness to go above and beyond for the sake our team and our participants is extraordinary. Thank you!
