The Caregivers Who Are Also Family: Understanding Kinship Care

When relatives or close friends step in to raise a child, they often do it suddenly and without a roadmap. Kinship care is when grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents, or older siblings raise a child whose parents can’t, and more than 2.5 million children in the U.S., about 3%, are in kinship care arrangements.

It’s a quiet kind of caregiving, one that doesn’t always come with a name or a plan. This September, for National Kinship Care Awareness Month, we’re sharing what kinship care looks like, the questions caregivers run into, and the people ready to help when they don’t know where to start.

SMP Scam Watch: Diabetic Monitoring Devices

There have been a lot of reports to the SMPs across the country about diabetic supply charges being found on Medicare statements when the beneficiary doesn’t have diabetes.

Have you read your most recent statement? If not, be sure to and see if you find any charges that look suspicious.

If you find something, report it! Call your local Senior Medicare Patrol at 1-877-808-2468.

September Star of the Month: Brittany Hudson

Brittany Hudson is recognized by her manager and colleagues for stepping seamlessly into a role that had been held for more than 20 years, her calm and solution-oriented approach, and the steady, positive energy she brings to her team every day.

Since joining The Senior Alliance, Brittany has been instrumental to the CCD department, coordinating MI Choice Waiver initial assessments and helping oversee the Nursing Facility Transition Program. More recently, she’s taken on managing MI Choice Waiver intake calls, coordinating and training staff on that process, and overseeing scheduling for the CM/CCS Program.

Here’s what her team has to say:

“Brittany’s calm, positive demeanor makes her a pleasure to work with, and she consistently demonstrates professionalism and thoughtfulness. She asks insightful questions, seeks opportunities to improve processes and procedures, and approaches every challenge with a solution-oriented mindset. I feel incredibly fortunate that Brittany chose to join our agency, and I am honored to have her as part of our team.” – Sarah Driscoll, CCD Program Manager

“I’m so pleased we were able to have Brittany added to our team. She is a great asset, and I feel she has fallen right into place with our Support Specialist Group. She always has a positive outlook and cheery disposition.” – Renee Farrugia, Coworker

“Brittany is not only a great worker, but she is a great trainer as well. She was very welcoming and was a great trainer. I am happy to work with her, and I appreciate the hard work she does. She made joining the program easy and fun!” – Audrey Glass, Coworker

“There are often curveballs thrown in the world of NFT; Brittany handles them as if she’s been doing this her whole life. She is never hesitant to make last-minute calendar changes, phone calls, and follow-ups. She may have felt a little nervous to fill some big shoes when Sandy retired, but the nerves were not necessary. She has gone above and beyond! We are so grateful to have her!” – Becca Drobet, Coworker

Brittany’s dedication, calm under pressure, and genuine care for her team make her a well-deserved Star of the Month. Congratulations, Brittany!
