Caregiver Burnout: What It Is and Why It Happens, and How to Get Help

Caregivers are the unsung heroes of our communities by providing physical, emotional, and sometimes financial support to older adults or people with disabilities. Whether you’re helping a parent manage medications, assisting a spouse with mobility, or coordinating services for a loved one, your care is invaluable.

But, caring for someone else can often come at the expense of your own well-being. That’s why it’s so important to recognize and address caregiver burnout–a very real, very common challenge that affects even the most dedicated caregivers.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or emotionally drained, you are not alone. The Senior Alliance is here to remind you that burnout is not a failure; it’s a sign that it’s time to seek support.

Congress is still debating the federal budget, and critical programs that support older adults and caregivers remain at risk.

Proposed cuts to the Older Americans ActMedicaid, and SNAP could reduce access to food, healthcare, and in-home supports that help people age with dignity.

We need your voice.

Please take a moment to contact your legislators and urge them to protect funding for these essential services. Every message helps lawmakers understand how much these programs matter to our communities.

Together, we can advocate for policies that respect and support older adults and the people who care for them.

Star of the Month: Deb Burke

Star of the Month, June 2025: Deb Burke

We are thrilled to honor Deb Burke as one of our Stars of the Month for June!

Here’s what our Program Manager, Kristin Holtz, has to say about her:

“To know Deb is to adore her! I was so stoked when Deb volunteered to help throw our Open House event, with a ‘put me anywhere and task me to do anything’ attitude, as she always offers her 100%. I immediately knew I wanted her to be the first person our guests encountered. She represents the agency through such a fun and passionate perspective, and it does not go unnoticed. During the event, several attendees and staff noted to me how awesome Deb was, warmly and enthusiastically welcoming guests to create a memorable experience. Definition of Ace in Their Place! She has also recently joined the Fun Committee and has jumped right in, sharing her time, ideas, and wisdom with us.

From Deb’s sunshiney and bright personality to the way she always makes me feel seen and valued, she helps fuel me to lean into connecting creatively, finding ways to make others feel the way she makes me feel.

Deb is so mindful and reflective of the work and efforts of everyone around her, and she makes it a point to share those sentiments with them. I cannot tell you how many times Deb makes the time to share her excitement, gratitude, and compassion with me. I have a folder in my inbox of saved emails that is called ‘smiles,’ and a good percentage of that mailbox is emails from Deb. Your kindness and enthusiasm are so very impactful and legendary, my friend. The Senior Alliance is a better place with you being a part of it. Thank you for being YOU, Deb – you are electrifying and inspirational!  I dig you so much!”

Thank you, Deb, for everything you do to make The Senior Alliance a great place to work!
