Caregiver Self-Care That Actually Works: Real Tips for Busy, Burned-Out Caregivers

For many family caregivers, time is stretched thin, emotions are worn raw, and the idea of taking a break feels unrealistic. If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t have time for myself,” then it’s time to recognize the signs of caregiver burnout and implement self-care practices that work for you.

The reality is that caregiver self-care is essential, not optional. Without intentional care for your own physical, emotional, and mental well-being, you’re at risk for caregiver burnout and caregiver fatigue.

These conditions can impact not only your ability to care for your loved one but also your long-term health and quality of life. At The Senior Alliance, we recognize the critical role caregivers play, and we’re here to provide realistic tools, support, and resources that fit into your everyday life.

Star of the Month: Jane Elliot & Sylvia Isaac

Congratulations to our Stars of the Month, Jane Elliot and Sylvia Isaac.

We are thrilled to honor Jane Elliot and Sylvia Isaac as one of our Stars of the Month for July!

Jane and Sylvia are nominated together by our Waiver Clinical Manager, Gail Wejrowski.

Here’s what Gail has to say about this dynamic duo:

“There are so many reasons to nominate these ladies, but I will have to choose this most recent story as my supporting evidence.

Another support coordinator reached out to me to tell me how grateful she is for Janet and Sylvia. That support coordinator had recently received a new case who had an assessment due on 7/22/25.  This participant also has a spouse that is in the Waiver program (the spouse’s primary support coordinator is Janet). When the support coordinator called the daughter to schedule the assessment, the daughter of the participant was not interested in scheduling a separate assessment for her father and ONLY wanted to schedule for the same time as her mother’s assessment. Unfortunately, the support coordinator was not available during the date and time that the mother’s assessment was scheduled for. So, Sylvia and Janet completed both spouses’ assessments so that the daughter’s preference was honored, and the other support coordinator didn’t have to alter their schedule.

This one example of altruism is just a drop in the bucket for these two! You can always find Janet and Sylvia covering other support coordinators during vacations, picking up extra visits because we are short-staffed, managing challenging cases, and taking cases outside of their designated zones. We are so fortunate they chose to join the Waiver Team.

I am beyond proud of you ladies!”

Thank you, Janet and Sylvia, for showing us all what real teamwork looks like!
