Planning for the Future: Long-Term Care Resources for Older Adults and Caregivers

October is Long-Term Care Planning Month, a time to think ahead about how we or our loved ones want to live as we age. Having a plan in place helps protect independence, preserve dignity, and provide peace of mind for both aging adults and their caregivers.

At The Senior Alliance, we help families across southern and western Wayne County understand their choices and connect with the right programs to support aging at home or in the community. From Person-Centered Options Counseling and Medicare Counseling through MI Options to in-home support programs, our goal is to make the process of long-term care planning easier to navigate, so older adults can continue living life their way.

MI Options: Guidance for Confident Choices

MI Options is a free, statewide program that helps adults and caregivers make informed decisions about health coverage, home-based support, and community care. Whether you’re enrolling in Medicare for the first time or exploring ways to remain independent at home, MI Options connects you with trained local counselors who offer:

  • Medicare counseling: Learn how to compare Medicare plans, maximize savings, and avoid scams.
  • Person-Centered Options Counseling (PCOC): Explore home and community-based long-term care services, including transportation, caregiver respite, housing, and more.

This no-cost, unbiased support helps you understand your full range of options and plan for care that fits your needs and lifestyle.

This SHIP program is supported by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $79,224 with 100 percent funding by ACL/HHS through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The contents are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the official views of, nor an endorsement, by ACL/HHS or the U.S. Government.

This PCOC program has been made possible through a grant awarded to The Senior Alliance by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Additional Support Through The Senior Alliance

Long-term care planning often involves more than one type of service. That’s why we also provide and coordinate access to programs that meet a range of needs.

These programs, together with MI Options, form a complete network of support that helps older adults and caregivers plan confidently and live fully.

We’re Here to Help You Live Your Way

Planning ahead is one of the most caring things we can do for ourselves and our loved ones. The Senior Alliance is here to guide you every step of the way with programs designed to protect independence, promote choice, and bring peace of mind to families across Wayne County.

If you or someone you care for is beginning to think about long-term care, call The Senior Alliance at (734) 722-2830 or visit thesenioralliance.org/services to learn more.

But you have stepped into a role that will challenge you, change you, and, with the right support, bring moments of deep connection you’ll never forget.
