MI Options FAQs

Navigating Medicare and long-term care options can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. MI Options connects you with free, trusted guidance from The Senior Alliance. Whether you’re learning about Medicare, exploring in-home supports, or planning for the future, these frequently asked questions can help you understand how our counselors can assist you every step of the way.

MI Options is a free, statewide program that connects adults and caregivers with trained local counselors for Medicare Counseling and long-term care counseling through Person-Centered Options Counseling (PCOC). These services help you make informed decisions about health coverage, long-term care, and community supports at no cost.

MI Options is available to Michigan adults 18 and older, including people with disabilities, caregivers, and Medicare beneficiaries. Whether you’re planning for your own care or helping a loved one, our team can connect you with the right support and guidance.

No. MI Options is a free program funded through the state of Michigan and offered locally through The Senior Alliance.

Medicare Counseling connects you with a trained, unbiased counselor who can explain your options and help you make the best decisions about your Medicare coverage. Through Michigan’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), you’ll receive personalized help reviewing plans, comparing costs, and identifying savings opportunities.

Our counselors can help you:

  • Understand Medicare and Medicaid coverage
  • Compare plan options and enrollment periods
  • Identify cost-saving programs for prescriptions and premiums
  • Avoid scams and resolve billing issues

If you live outside The Senior Alliance service area, call the statewide MI Options hotline at 800.803.7174 (Mon – Fri, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.).

Person Centered Options Counseling (PCOC) connects you with a trained counselor who helps you explore long-term care and community support options. Together, you’ll create a plan that reflects your goals, values, and needs to help you or your loved one stay independent at home and engaged in your community.

Counselors can help you explore:

  • In-home and community-based care options
  • Transportation and housing needs
  • Caregiver respite and family supports
  • Planning for life changes or transitions

Call 734.727.2067 to speak with a local counselor Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. They’ll guide you through the process and help you build a plan tailored to your goals.

The SHIP program is supported by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $79,224 with 100 percent funding by ACL/HHS through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. To get started, call The Senior Alliance MI Options team from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday–Friday for local options. Our team will connect you with a trained counselor who can guide you through Medicare questions or long-term care options, all at no cost.

Outside of The Senior Alliance service area of southern and western Wayne County? These residents and all individuals can call 800.803.7174 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday–Friday to connect with the MI Options statewide hotline for Medicare Counseling services local to you.
