Dear New Caregiver,

First, let me say this: you are doing something extraordinary. You may not feel like it right now, standing in the kitchen with dishes piled up, a list of phone calls to make, and someone you love calling your name from the other room. But you have stepped into a role that will challenge you, change you, and, with the right support, bring moments of deep connection you’ll never forget.

For many family caregivers, time is stretched thin, emotions are worn raw, and the idea of taking a break feels unrealistic. If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t have time for myself,” then it’s time to recognize the signs of caregiver burnout and implement self-care practices that work for you. 

Caregivers are the unsung heroes of our communities by providing physical, emotional, and sometimes financial support to older adults or people with disabilities. Whether you’re helping a parent manage medications, assisting a spouse with mobility, or coordinating services for a loved one, your care is invaluable.

But, caring for someone else can often come at the expense of your own well-being. That’s why it’s so important to recognize and address caregiver burnout—a very real, very common challenge that affects even the most dedicated caregivers.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or emotionally drained, you are not alone. The Senior Alliance is here to remind you that burnout is not a failure; it’s a sign that it’s time to seek support. We’re here to help.

As you gather with family this holiday season, take a moment to truly observe and connect with your aging loved ones. Beyond the warm hugs and shared meals, you may want to pay attention to subtle cues that might indicate a need for support or assistance.
